Laramie Project
Beit Zvi School of the Performing Arts | 2019
In October 1998, Matthew Shepherd, a 21-year-old gay student, was discovered tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming, having endured a brutal beating and left exposed to the cold elements. This appalling hate crime reverberated across the United States and the world at large. In the aftermath of the incident, a team of actors from New York's "Tectonic Theater Project" set out to interview the residents of Laramie.
The resulting play provides a nuanced portrayal of the diverse voices within the American nation, capturing their reactions to the murder and the ensuing media frenzy.
On a minimalist stage, with a virtuoso ensemble seamlessly portraying various characters, locations, and perspectives, the story of Laramie unfolds. More than two decades since this tragic event, Matthew Shepherd's compelling narrative continues to resonate, serving as a powerful call to action
